Rope Access Exam Editorial Team

The IRATA RASS examination is a 90-minute online theory exam with 50 knowledge-based and 2 scenario-based questions, taken within 60 days of your first training day after at least 14 hours of classroom training; passing requires 75% or higher, and certification lasts three years while you keep Level 3, first aid and annual CPD current.

What the RASS role covers

A Rope Access Safety Supervisor directly supervises on-site rope access operations against a specified work plan, monitoring compliance with plans, risk assessments and IRATA requirements.

IRATA defines the role as maintaining rope access operational safety and providing Direct Supervision of a rope access team. In practice, that means checking that work follows the operational plan and risk assessments, the member company's rope access management system, the IRATA International Code of Practice (ICOP) and the IRATA Membership Requirements. The role's requirements are set out in ICOP Section 2.6.2.

Direct Supervision has a specific meaning: supervising at the location of operations, in a way that lets you give instruction, perform dynamic risk assessment, carry out rescue and give physical assistance if required. The exam assesses whether you can operate in that role as IRATA describes it, not as any particular employer defines it, since contractual responsibilities can differ between employers.

The requirements themselves live in the IRATA RASSTACS scheme document [TC-401] and ICOP [TC-102]. This guide explains the route and the exam; read those two documents for the full supervisory duties.

Prerequisites and the qualification route

You need valid IRATA Level 3 certification covering the training and exam dates, registration on IRATA TechConnect, and completion of an approved training course before you can book the exam.

Before applying, confirm two things: your Level 3 certification must be valid for the whole training course and on the examination date, and you must be registered on IRATA TechConnect, IRATA's online portal for managing contact details and certification.

The route then runs in order. You choose an IRATA RASS Training Provider (RTP) from the member directory, apply, and complete the training. The RTP gives you a RASS Registration Code, which you enter in TechConnect to request a RASS Examination Code. With that code you book the exam through Pearson VUE, IRATA's independent online examination provider.

RASS certification is an add-on to Level 3, not a replacement for it. If your Level 3 later expires, is downgraded, or is suspended or withdrawn, your RASS qualification stops being valid.

The training course and its mandatory exercises

Training is a minimum of 14 classroom hours over at least 2 days, is theory-based, and includes mandatory scenario-based group exercises; there is no practical rope access assessment.

An IRATA-approved RASS Instructor delivers the course. The assessment contains no practical rope access elements, because your practical competence is already demonstrated by your Level 3 qualification. Training providers may use rope access demonstrations to illustrate scenarios, but you are not required to take part in any rigging or setup for them.

The course covers nine learning objectives: understanding operating procedures and pre-work; compliance; planning; on-site personnel competency and selection; equipment; on-site operational control; communication; human factors; and industrial rope access operational knowledge. These objectives correspond with Sections 6 and 7 of the RASSTACS [TC-401].

The mandatory group exercises require you to deliver a pre-work briefing, deliver a toolbox talk, update a risk assessment and communicate the changes, and update a rescue plan and communicate the changes. Practise explaining what has changed and what the team needs to do in response.

Exam structure, question types and scoring

The exam has 50 knowledge-based and 2 scenario-based questions with 90 minutes allowed; RASS candidates pass at 75% or higher.

You must sit the exam on a separate calendar date from your training, as the scheme requires. You have 60 days from the first day of training to complete it successfully. Pearson VUE delivers the exam online, so you can sit it at home, at an RTP's training venue, at a Pearson VUE test centre or another location that meets the system and exam conditions; alternative locations are invigilated and recorded throughout.

Four question types appear. The table below summarizes how each one is answered.

Results appear immediately after you submit or once time expires. A RASS candidate passes at 75% or higher; below 75% is a fail. Candidates on the separate RASS Instructor pathway need 90% or higher for a distinction, so do not read the instructor threshold as the normal pass mark.

If you are registered in a non-English speaking country, you receive an additional 30 minutes, for 120 minutes in total. The exam itself is currently available in English only.

What to study and which documents to use

Study the nine course learning objectives using the documents IRATA lists for exam preparation, and get the detailed syllabus from RASSTACS [TC-401] in your TechConnect account.

IRATA advises familiarizing yourself with a defined set of supporting documents before training: IRATA TACS [TC-101], ICOP [TC-102], the IRATA Membership Requirements [QP-300], the IRATA Bye-Laws [QP-103], IRATA Topic Sheets, WASA Reports, Safety Bulletins, and the RASS Theory Examination References [FM-455]. The guide points to specific section references for each document, listed in Section 6 of the RASSTACS.

Use Sections 6 and 7 of RASSTACS for the detailed learning objectives and references. IRATA distributes this document through the publications area of your TechConnect account. The public Candidate's Guide establishes the nine objective headings used here; use your authorised syllabus and course materials to plan the detailed reading.

One suggested study order is to read ICOP Section 2.6.2 for the supervisor role, work through the nine objectives with their listed references, and practise the four mandatory course activities. Rehearse explaining each update to a team rather than only recognising its name on a checklist.

Paper exercise: changed conditions before work starts

When a control your documents rely on disappears, stop, reassess the risk assessment and rescue plan, communicate the changes to the team, and only then allow work to proceed.

The scenario below is an original planning exercise, not a reproduced exam question. It practises the same skill the mandatory course exercises target: updating a risk assessment and a rescue plan, then communicating the changes.

State the premises before answering. You are the RASS for a planned facade inspection. The method statement assumes a ground-level exclusion zone keeps third parties out of the drop zone, and the risk assessment relies on that exclusion zone as the control for third-party exposure. The work has not started. As RASS, you provide direct supervision at the location of operations and monitor compliance with the operational plan and risk assessments. The client changes the planned arrangement: the client tells you a public walkway must stay open through part of the drop zone today.

Paper exercise

Given the premises above, what should you do before work is allowed to start, and why is carrying on under the existing documents the wrong answer?

Show answer

Keep the work stopped. Reassess the third-party exposure, determine whether suitable controls can be established with the party controlling the walkway, and check the effect on rescue arrangements. Revise the risk assessment and any affected plans, obtain the approvals required by the site, put the agreed controls in place and brief the team. Work can start only when the revised arrangements actually control the risk; matching documents and a briefing alone are insufficient. If suitable protection cannot be established, the planned work cannot proceed.

The RASS role includes checking compliance with operational plans and risk assessments, and direct supervision enables on-site assessment and intervention. The stated exclusion control is unavailable, so proceeding under the old plan leaves the public exposed. This original exercise applies the course activities of updating plans and communicating changes. It does not predict an official question or prescribe a universal sequence for every workplace.

Results, retakes and keeping the qualification

Passing earns a three-year certificate with an 'S' prefix on your IRATA number; you maintain it with annual CPD, valid Level 3, in-date first aid, and a full course and exam every three years.

If all certification requirements are met, IRATA issues a RASS certificate showing your IRATA number prefixed with an 'S', and on first registration a RASS experience logbook. The certificate is valid for three years from the date of the successful examination.

Maintenance has several parts: valid Level 3 certification; an in-date first aid certificate; completing and passing the IRATA online RASS CPD training within every 12-month period after qualifying; keeping the logbook up to date where local legislation and standards require it; and completing the full training course and passing the exam again within the 60-day period before your current qualification expires.

If you fail, you can retake the exam within the same 60-day window from your first training day. Request a new RASS Registration Code by emailing training@irata.org, and allow 10 working days to receive the new examination code; that processing time is not an extra waiting period on top of the window. A fee applies to re-sit codes under the published IRATA Price List [FM-200]. If the 60 days lapse without a pass, you must complete the full training course again before further attempts.

Booking details sit in the Candidate's Guide: the RTP issues your Registration Code after training, TechConnect converts it to an Examination Code, and Pearson VUE hosts the booking. If you sit at home or another non-test-centre location, run the Pearson VUE system test in advance and confirm your photo identification meets the accepted list, because you will only be admitted if system, environment and identity checks all pass.

A practical preparation checklist

Confirm prerequisites, read the official documents, rehearse the four course activities, and prepare your exam setup before the 60-day window starts.

These steps are suggestions drawn from the official guidance, not additional requirements. Work through them in the order that suits your schedule.

Before training, confirm your Level 3 validity across both the course and the exam date, register on TechConnect, and skim the listed reference documents, starting with ICOP Section 2.6.2. On the first day, bring government-issued photo identification and your IRATA logbook so the training provider can verify you.

During and after the course, practise delivering a pre-work briefing and a toolbox talk aloud, and rehearse updating a risk assessment and a rescue plan and explaining the changes as you would to a team. For the exam itself, IRATA's own tips apply: read each question carefully, check how many answers each item requires, and review everything before submitting.

  • Confirm valid Level 3 certification for training and exam dates
  • Register on IRATA TechConnect before applying
  • Read ICOP Section 2.6.2 and the Section 6 references in RASSTACS [TC-401]
  • Rehearse the four mandatory activities: pre-work briefing, toolbox talk, risk assessment update, rescue plan update
  • Run the Pearson VUE system test if sitting away from a test centre
  • Track the 60-day exam window from your first training day

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers to help you apply the guidance for IRATA Rope Access Safety Supervisor (RASS) Examination.

Is the RASS qualification the same as IRATA Level 3?
No. Level 3 is a technician grade and a prerequisite: you must hold valid Level 3 certification through training and the exam date. RASS is a separate supervisory qualification on top of it, and RASS certification becomes invalid if your Level 3 expires, is downgraded, or is suspended or withdrawn. Separately, RASS Instructor certification does not certify you as an IRATA RASS.
How much do RASS training and the exam cost?
IRATA publishes no fixed figures in the candidate guidance; fees for training and examination come from your local IRATA RASS Training Providers, listed in the member directory. A separate fee applies to re-sit examination codes under the published IRATA Price List [FM-200].
Can I take the RASS exam in another language?
The exam is currently available in English only. If you are registered in a non-English speaking country, you receive an additional 30 minutes, for 120 minutes total. If you qualify for an accommodation that has not been applied, contact IRATA at accomodations@irata.org.
